What Is the Provenance Ledger?
The Provenance Ledger is the evidentiary foundation of the PBS/MPS architecture: a proposed system for establishing verifiable records of creation, contribution, provenance, and ownership history.
What does the Provenance Ledger do?
The Provenance Ledger is designed to answer a foundational question:
What is this asset, where did it come from, and who contributed to its creation or development?
PBS/MPS begins with provenance because economic attribution requires an evidentiary basis. Before performance can be measured or economic rights considered, the system must be capable of documenting the asset and its contribution history.
Why does provenance matter?
Many intangible assets develop through cumulative contributions: research, expertise, creative work, intellectual property, agricultural genetics, data, processes, and other forms of knowledge.
Conventional records may identify a final owner or legal entity without necessarily preserving a complete history of the contributions that led to the resulting asset.
The provenance concept attempts to preserve that history in a form that can later support verification, attribution, performance analysis, and auditability.
What kinds of relationships can provenance describe?
Creation
A provenance record can identify the origin of an asset or contribution and associate that origin with an attributable participant or source.
Contribution
Where multiple inputs contribute to a resulting asset, provenance can preserve records of those contributions rather than recording only the final output.
Development History
Provenance can document how an asset changes over time and preserve relationships between earlier and later stages of development.
Ownership History
Provenance can support an auditable record of ownership-related information associated with the asset and its history.
Does the Provenance Ledger determine value?
Not by itself.
The Provenance Ledger establishes the proposed evidentiary record. It does not independently determine market price, investment value, or real-world performance.
Within the PBS architecture, provenance and performance serve different functions. Provenance concerns the history and attribution of the asset. Performance concerns independently observable outcomes associated with that asset.
How does the Provenance Ledger fit into PBS?
Provenance Ledger
Establishes the evidentiary history of the asset, contributions, and associated ownership information.
Performance Oracle
Connects the documented asset with independently observable information about real-world performance.
Exchange Protocol
Represents the proposed market layer in which compliant economic interests could be listed, priced, transferred, reported, and audited.
How does the Provenance Ledger relate to MPS?
The Meritocratic Provenance System is the broader framework for documenting contribution, establishing provenance, incorporating measurable performance information, and examining attributable economic value.
The Provenance Ledger supplies the historical record on which those later functions can depend.
How could provenance apply to human expertise?
Expertise is often cumulative and collaborative. Knowledge can be developed across years of work, research, experimentation, documentation, and interaction among many contributors.
MPS proposes that meaningful contribution histories can be documented rather than allowing the relationship between human contribution and later economic output to disappear entirely.
The Provenance Ledger is the proposed evidentiary layer for preserving those relationships.
Why is provenance relevant to artificial intelligence?
AI systems can incorporate information originating from many forms of human knowledge, research, creative activity, data, and expertise.
The policy question raised by MPS is whether future economic systems should preserve meaningful records connecting human contribution with systems and assets that incorporate those contributions.
Provenance provides the proposed evidentiary starting point for examining that question.
How does SeedBid™ illustrate provenance?
SeedBid™ is the proposed agricultural implementation of the PBS/MPS framework.
Within that use case, provenance concerns records associated with agricultural genetic intellectual property and the history of contributions involved in developing an asset.
Performance information belongs to the separate Performance Oracle layer. Keeping those functions distinct allows provenance evidence and performance evidence to be examined separately.
Does a provenance record itself establish a legal ownership right?
A provenance record and a legally enforceable ownership right are not the same thing.
The Provenance Ledger is proposed as evidentiary infrastructure. Property rights, intellectual-property rights, contractual rights, and securities regulation remain questions of applicable law.
This distinction is particularly important to the Washington policy discussion because DFI identified property rights and intellectual property among the legal areas implicated by the larger PBS/MPS architecture.
Why is this page limited to the architectural concept?
Meritocrat.org publishes the conceptual architecture necessary to explain how PBS/MPS is intended to work.
This page is not intended to serve as a technical implementation specification, deployment guide, legal ownership registry, or securities offering document.
Its purpose is to provide legislators, researchers, policymakers, and the public with a clear explanation of the role provenance plays within the proposed framework.
